A Cat Sitter’s Experience With Kitty Litters

August 9, 2024

I’ve grown up with cats. For most of my life, there was only one type of litter – so far as I knew – and that was good old clay. Dusty as heck, but it did the trick. These days, there is no lack of variety when it comes to litters for your kitties. This is our first blog, and it is going to cover our experiences with litters of all types.

First up – Clay

Clay litters come in various sizes and qualities and it’s heavy!

Usually.

Then again, they sell some light varieties of litter these days that are quite light. But lightweight is not cheap! So while you can pick up a 50lb box of scoopable clay litter from Costco for about $30, you can also get a box of lightweight litter (12lb) for about the same price in many retail stores.

They oftentimes say that this scoopable litter is dust free. That is most often, from my experience anyways, not the case. A fine layer of dust will ultimately find its way onto everything in a room that has clay litter boxes in it.

So it can be inexpensive, and it can be quite dusty, but on the bright side, it usually clumps very well. You don’t flush it, but clearing the litter box isn’t too difficult when you have a good scooper. Scoopers should be big enough to catch the clumps with enough room for the rest of the litter to sift back down into the box. I’ve seen all kinds of scoops and highly recommend that everyone get a quality, adequately sized scoop. So worth the investment!

Our experience started with clay, but has since included silica crystals, pine pellets, paper pellets, walnut husks and has come full circle with a certain kind of scoopable clay litter. Future posts will cover each of those so you can see what those experiences can tell you in case you are thinking of making a change.

Until then, all the best from your friends at High Park Cat Sitting!
